Donald Robert Lowe (1936- ) Papers (KC0223)
Born in Pittsburg, Kansas, Donald Lowe received his Bachelor of Music Education in 1958 and his Master of Music Education in 1964 from Wichita State University. In 1958 he joined the teaching staff of the Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools. As a trumpet player, Lowe participated in various orchestral and band organizations, including the Kansas City, Kansas Civic Symphony where he also served as assistant conductor. In 1970, he was named as the Kansas City, Kansas Jaycees Outstanding Young Educator and the runner-up for the state of Kansas Jaycees Outstanding Young Educator award.
Lowe’s doctoral dissertation was entitled Sir Carl Busch: His Life and Work as a Teacher, Conductor, and Composer, and he received the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts in 1972 from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Dr. Lowe is a Professor of Music and Director of the School of Music [2005]. Prior to his appointment as director, Dr. Lowe served as the Associate Dean of the Graduate School, Associate Director of the University of Georgia Hugh Hodgson School of Music, and Coordinator of Graduate Studies in Music. Music education, music literature, and conducting are his principal teaching areas while historical research is the focus of his scholarly work. He is a member of the graduate faculty and includes among his publications articles in the “Journal of Research in Music Education” and the “New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians.” Dr. Lowe serves on the editorial board of the Southeastern Journal of Research in Music Education.
This material was collected by Donald R. Lowe in preparation for his dissertation about Sir Carl Busch. Most of the papers consist of photocopies from institutions such as the Kansas City Public Library and the Kansas City Museum, as well as the UMKC Conservatory Library. Four rolls of microfilm from the Royal Danish Library show its extensive collection of Carl Busch correspondence. Unique among the papers are the written recollections of Carl and Sallie Busch contributed by Thusnelda Bircsak. 1898-ca. 1970.
