Swinney Recreation Center offers six
25-yard lap lanes and a separate
training area in the shallow end.
Pool depth ranges from 4 feet to 13
feet. The water temperature is
maintained at a comfortable 82-83
degrees. |

Lap Swimming Etiquette |
|
For the health and enjoyment of all
swimmers, please abide by the
following:

Expect to share a lane. If
there are 3 or more swimmers,
you must circle swim

Swim in a counterclockwise
direction staying on the right
side of the lane

Try to swim with others of your
own pace

Pass only when the passing lane
(middle of lane) is clear

Avoid congregating at end walls
-
Move
to far corners of the lane if
you need to stop

Be courteous and use caution at
all times while swimming

Swinney
Recreation Center offers a number of
programs, events and classes for
patrons and students.
You may register for any class in
the SRC Membership Office or over
the phone by calling 816.235.2712.
Registration deadlines are usually
one week before the start date. You
may also seek additional information
on these programs by calling or
emailing John Aust, Aquatics Manager,
at
austj@umkc.edu.
Aquatic program dates and times may
be subject to change. Programs,

Swimming and Diving Clinic
This program is to provide
instruction to assist swimmers
(ranging from beginning to
intermediate) improve their swimming
and diving skills. It is designed to
give participants a positive
experience while refining swimming
and diving basics. This program is
beneficial to the leisure or
recreational swimmer as well as
candidates interested in Lifeguard
or Water Safety Instruction
certifications.
Swimming and Diving clinics
are available for UMKC Students and
SRC Members for $10.00. Non-members'
fees are $15.00 (includes a day pass
to SRC for individuals who are 18
years of age and older.

Youth Swimming Lessons (Group):
American Red Cross Learn to Swim
instruction provides children
opportunities for achievement at
various skill levels. The
Pre-School class is a
parent/child program that introduces
the younger swimmer to the aquatic
environment and encourages
locomotion. The Beginner class helps
swimmers become comfortable in the
water and create a foundation of
skills. The Intermediate class helps
further develop and refine skills.
Private, Semi-Private, & Small Group
Swimming Lessons
are available for swimmers ages 3 to
adult. Private lessons are $20.00
per lesson, Semi-Private lessons are
$12.50 per person per lesson, and
Small Group lessons are $10.00 per
lesson. Each lesson is 30 minutes;
times are based on your time
preference and instructor
availability. Scheduling may take up
to two weeks, be sure to include
your time preference with
registration information.

Dive Clinics

$5.00. Non-Members are $10.00

Lifeguard Training
Courses:
Lifeguard Training Courses
Lifeguard Training Courses
teach lifeguard candidates the
skills and knowledge needed to
prevent and respond to aquatic
emergencies. The course content and
activities prepare candidates to
work at traditional pools. At the
completion of the course, students
will be certified in Lifeguarding,
First Aid, CPR for the Professional
Rescuer and AED Training.
Prerequisites are: minimum age 15,
300 yard swim and timed 10lb brick
retrieval at a depth of 7 - 10 feet.
Lifeguard Training Course Fees are
$185.00 ($160.00 course fee + $25.00
non-refundable skills test
administration fee).
Lifeguard Training Challenge
Lifeguard Training Challenge
provides individuals the opportunity
to prove their competencies in
specific knowledge and skills for
the Basic Lifeguarding
Certification. All responsibility
for preparedness rests solely on the
participant (may attempt a challenge
only one time).
Lifeguard Training Challenge Course
Fees are $70.00.
Lifeguard Instructor Training
Lifeguard Instructor Training
trains instructor candidates to
teach Lifeguard Training (First Aid,
CPR/AED for the Professional
Rescuer, Oxygen Administration, and
Bloodborne Pathogens Training).

Water Safety Instructor (WSI)
Courses:
Water Safety Instructor (WSI)
trains individuals to teach American
Red Cross swimming and water safety
courses. Training includes course
planning, organizing, skill
development, teaching methods, and
program development. Pre-requisites
are: minimum age 16; successfully
pass the pre-course session, which
includes demonstrating the 6 main
strokes and treading water; and
completion of the
Fundamentals of Instructor
Training (FIT), which will
be held at the beginning of the
course.
WSI Course Fees are $200.00 ($175.00
course fee + $25.00 non-refundable
skills test administration fee).

SCUBA - PADI Open Water Diver
Courses:
SCUBA - PADI Open Water Diver
is the most widely recognized &
respected SCUBA diving certification
in the world. Within a few classes,
you can be enjoying the underwater
world! Nothing compares to the
‘weightless’ exhilaration of
breathing underwater. If you have
an appetite for excitement and
adventure, odds are you can become a
SCUBA diver.
This is part one of a two part
course.
The fee for the one weekend pool &
classroom portion is $185.00 and
includes: use of Diver Manual,
Recreational Dive Planner &
Workbook, Adventure Logbook, Student
Record Folder, use of videos/DVDs,
the use of BCD, tank, regulator, weights,
mask, snorkel and fins.
You also can get a referral at no
additional cost and receive 20% off
SCUBA gear!
Only one weekend course is required
for certification. The registration deadline is generally
one week in advance before each
weekend course. Courses are offered throughout the
semester and fill up quickly.
Generally, six or more participants
are required for courses to take
place. While some classes are
offered at UMKC, at times, classes
occur at an off-campus location.
Times and locations are subject to

SCUBA - PADI Open Water Diver Course
Fees are $185.00.
A small administration fee not to
exceed $10.00 per person will be
charged separately at off-campus
locations.

Discover SCUBA Courses:
Discover SCUBA
Courses introduce potential divers
to breathing underwater. With
minimal explanation, new divers
begin using SCUBA equipment and
experience a shallow water dive in a
pool under direct instructor
supervision. Discover SCUBA dispels
many of the common misconceptions
about SCUBA diving by letting people
try it for themselves. Discover
SCUBA encourages participants to
continue their dive education by
enrolling in a PADI Open Water Dive
Course, offered by SCUBA Adventures
through UMKC, and earn
certification.

General Water Safety
provides individuals with an
awareness of the importance of water
safety and to provide general
information being safe in, on or
around the water. While you’re there
you can find additional information
about the aquatic programs offered
by SRC. This dry-land event is free
for all UMKC students and SRC
members but you must RSVP in
advance.
CPR for the Pro Rescuer w/AED
Challenge
provides individuals the opportunity
to prove their competencies in
specific knowledge and skills for
the CPR for the Pro Rescuer w/AED.
The challenge is designed for
someone who is currently certified
and just needs to renew their
certification. Uncertified
individuals may enroll, but All
responsibility for preparedness
rests solely on the participant.

Splash:
After a busy week studying, come and
cool off in the pool where you can
join in a pick-up game of water
basketball or just relax on a
noodle. The diving boards will also
be open and music will be blasting!
While you’re there you can find more
information about the pool hours and
other aquatic programs such as swim
classes or SCUBA diving! This will
be a fun and refreshing way to start
the weekend! This is a free event
open to all UMKC students; but it
must be co-sponsored by an
affiliated UMKC organization. Get
your group to set up a splash event

Aqua Sphere swim goggles are for
sale ($15.00 each). These goggles
are easy to adjust, soft and
flexible for ultimate comfort and
fit. Kids' goggles and SEAL masks

Rules & Regulations |
|
For your health
and safety, it is imperative patrons
and students alike familiarize
themselves with all Aquatic Center
rules and regulations. |

No diving in shallow water
|

Swimming under the bulkhead is
strictly prohibited
|

The emergency alert system is
one long whistle blast,
all patrons must exit the pool
|

Personal items should be placed
in lockers
|

Swimmers must remove bandages or
adhesive tape before entering
the pool
|

|
-
Running, pushing, shoving or
horseplay is not permitted. One
must walk on the deck
|

Diving boards may only be used
when permitted.
Proper diving board use must be
followed at all times

Follow healthy swimming
behaviors (practice good
hygiene). Showers are required
before entering pool. Do not
swim when ill with diarrhea. Do
not swallow pool water. Patrons
with skin diseases, infections,
or open sores are not permitted
to use pool. Nose blowing and
spitting in the pool or gutters
is not allowed
