As a Student Affairs agency, Swinney Recreation Center meets the ever-changing needs and interests of students and the campus community by providing programs, services and facilities that are comprehensive, inclusive and unsurpassed in quality. Through participation, we enhance the sociological, physiological and psychological well-being of each individual.
We create environments and opportunities that foster community, form lasting memories and instill a sense of belonging. We promote physical fitness, healthy habits and balanced behaviors, improving the overall wellness of participants. We teach students meaningful life skills, encourage personal achievement, and develop involved and responsible citizens.
In fulfilling this mission, we support and complement the institution’s academic and public service objectives, and make significant contributions to
the University’s disciplined culture of excellence.
Welcome to Swinney Recreation Center!
New for 2009
-2010:
Swinney Recreation Center features new spacious locker rooms
and Service
Center, as well
as an updated
steam room and
sauna.
Construction on
the $2 million
project was
completed in
August 2008.
SRC continued our upgrades in
mid-October 2008 as we
introduced a new
workout experience
for students,
faculty, staff and
community members.
The Fitness Center
now features
state-of-the-art TechnoGym
circuit equipment.
Old
Swinney gymnasium
walls and stairwells
were repainted
during the first
week of June and
July 2009. The Control
Center check-in area
has been updated to greet
students, members
and guests as of the first
of July.
In addition, all five basketball
courts received a facelift at the
end of the summer.
All wooden floors,
including
racquetball and
squash courts were
repaired and
refinished in late
July/early August.
The Aquatics Center
had its annual
cleaning August 3
through August 9.
Scheduled for
completion in fall
2009, the Stanley H.
Durwood Soccer
Stadium and
Recreational Field
will provide a
number of activities
and opportunities
for UMKC students,
SRC members and
community partners.
The illuminated
field area will also
enhance Campus
Recreation and
Intramurals' ability
to offer an expanded
schedule for
students. The
track and field area
opened on August 17, with the
support building ready for
University office use
on November 2.
