Faculty Roles in High-Impact Practices - Proposals due September 8
March 25-27, 2010
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

AAC&U's Network for Academic Renewal invites proposals that explore the faculty’s use of high-impact practices (such as learning communities, writing-intensive courses, and capstone projects) to foster student learning of essential outcomes. The conference seeks proposals highlighting models of these high-impact practices and those that address issues of faculty rewards, promotion and tenure, cost-effectiveness, and more.

This conference will highlight the new and expanding roles that faculty are playing in developing and using high-impact practices—in courses, majors, general education, and in partnership with student affairs—along with discussion of their impact on both faculty and students.  For more info:
Network for Academic Renewal

Due to the current budget situation, FaCET is no longer providing lunches at its seminars.  From now on, we plan to publish subsequent issues of our newsletter -- "Facets of Teaching and Learning" -- in an electronic format.  We appreciate your ongoing support and encourage you to continue attending our seminars (see the calendar of events, below).  We also encourage you to propose subjects for future conversations.

For information on the FaCET Teaching Enhancement Grants please contact Jennifer Friend, friendji@umkc.edu, or come to one of the information sessions on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday, September 14, 15, or 16, 2009.  For details of these sessions, please see below.

Please send an e-mail to Bob Schubert at least 24 hours in advance when you plan to attend any of our seminars: RSVP's help us with our planning. You are welcome to bring your own lunch.

A Webinar:  Helping Students Learn From Ethical Failures
Featured Higher Education Presenter:
Tricia Bertram Gallant, Ph.D.
Location:  Miller Nichols Library, Room 121 (next door to FaCET)
Students cheat.   Even before leaving high school, more than half have cheated on tests, and more than a third have plagiarized. (And those are the ones who admit it.)  These days, it's almost too easy to cheat. Stiff competition for admissions and the imperative of high grades give students powerful motive; the Internet provides ubiquitous opportunity.  We're never going to eliminate cheating. But we can create programs that educate students about honesty and character, reduce the incidence of cheating and turn ethical lapses into opportunities for growth and learning.  That's the focus of a brand-new online seminar coming December 9. If
you're concerned about academic integrity, and committed to championing it on your campus, you'll want to circle the date.
In Helping Students Learn from Ethical Failures, Dr. Tricia Bertram Gallant will explain how to move institutional attitudes about
cheating past despair and paralysis to enthusiastic support for change. During this 90-minute audio seminar, you'll learn about:
The student mindset that cheating is "necessary."  How cheating is spreading and democratizing.  How to conduct a self-assessment of ethical learning opportunities on your campus.
How to analyze your institution's approach to student cheating.
How to overcome resistance to providing values/ethics education.
How to lead a campus-wide integrity movement.
How to build a coalition of stakeholders with an interest in enhancing academic integrity.
How to leverage cheating incidents to stimulate prioritization of ethics and integrity.
And much more.
A noted author and speaker, Dr. Bertram Gallant is Academic Integrity Coordinator at the University of California San Diego, and Chair of the Center for Academic Integrity Advisory Council. She has extensive experience developing integrity policies and procedures.
Dr. Bertram Gallant's latest books include Academic Integrity in the Twenty-First Century: A Teaching and Learning Imperative (Jossey-Bass) and her co-authored Cheating in School: What We Know and What We Can Do (Wiley-Blackwell).
Please RSVP to Bob Schubert, schubertr@umkc.edu, by 4:00 p.m. on the business day prior to this seminar, so we know how many are attending.
