2010 Scholastic Writing Awards Contest

Students, grades 7-12, are eligible to participate in The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards Contest of 2010, co-sponsored by the GKCWP. Last year, several students in our area won top awards and were published in Missouri Youth Write.

Missouri Region (includes Kansas City area districts in Kansas) winners and their teachers will be honored at the 2010 Write-to-Learn Conference in Osage Beach, MO, on Friday, February 26, where winning writings will be displayed.

Visit www.artandwriting.org for submission guidelines and contest entry forms. Missouri entries due Friday, January 15, 2010!

Migrant Education & English Language Learning Conference

The GKCWP will have an information booth at the November 18-20, MELL Conference at the Hyatt Crown Center in Kansas City. We need a few more TCs to help staff the booth and tell others what the GKCWP has to offer. Contact Katie (klinek@umkc.edu) if you plan already or would like to attend.

GKCWP Goes to Philadelphia

This year's National Writing Project Annual Meeting will convene in Philadelphia, November 19-21, in advance of the NCTE Annual Convention. If you plan to attend one of these conferences and would like to join with your GKCWP friends for conviviality in the city of brotherly love, please contact Katie: klinek@umkc.edu.

Young Writers Conference and Contest, Spring 2010

The GKCWP is hosting our Spring Conference for Middle Schools on March 31, 2010. This is a chance for young writers to participate in writing workshops presented by the Greater Kansas City Writing Project! At the same time, their teachers are invited to attend separate in-service presentations offered by GKCWP Teacher Consultants. Students and teachers are encouraged to register in groups of 6-- 1 teacher for every 5 students. Registration is due Monday, March 1, 2010. Download the Youth Conference and Contest Registration Form.

Nominate Outstanding Educators for the GKCWP

Please send us your nominations for outstanding educators representing our area's rich diversity: grade levels P-20; all content areas; administrators, teachers, and instructional coaches; public and private schools; rural, suburban, and urban districts. E-mail your nominations to GKCWP Assistant Director, Lindsey Quinn: llqzt2@umkc.edu.

TCs, Save the Date: December 5!

Please plan to join us on Saturday, December 5, 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. for a day of Greater Kansas City Writing Project work. We will work, share, and celebrate together as we continue to revise ourselves, our site, and our teaching.
