Why UMKC?

UMKC’s campus is located in the heart of Kansas City and within walking distance of one of the most distinguished museums in the nation, The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. The Kansas City area is also home to two world-class contemporary arts museums: Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art and Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art. The Crossroads Arts District and the Urban Culture Project offer additonal gallery activities around the revitalized downtown.

Fast Facts

  • There are approximately 175 undergraduates in the Department of Art and Art History.
  • 25 percent are studying art, 15 percent are studying art history, and 60 percent are studying studio art.
  • Average size of a studio art class is 15 students.
  • Art history lecture courses at the 200- and 300-level average about 40 students; and at the 400-level, art history courses average 15 students.
  • The department hosts a visiting artist and critic lecture series.
  • The UMKC Gallery of Art holds an annual student art exhibit.

 

Student Organizations

The Student Art League and the UMKC Hand Print Press provide students with opportunities to:

    • meet visiting artists,
    • organize and participate in special exhibits,
    • attend art openings, dinners and critiques, and
    • take field trips to museums and galleries in
      other cities.

Admission Requirements

The requirements vary according to what degree is being pursued. For freshmen art applicants, there are no special requirements beyond those for admission to the University.

 

Transfer students entering the art program need to meet with an art adviser to show their portfolios and transcripts in order to evaluate course equivalencies for advanced placement.

 

Prerequisite Courses

  • There are no prerequisite courses before becoming a studio art major.

Major Courses

  • Three foundation courses (9 hours).
  • Eight courses (24 hours) of electives selected from at least three different studio areas (drawing, painting, print making, graphic design, photography, digital imaging, and electronic media) and of these hours at least 12 must be upper division (additional 6 hours can be chosen from art history).
  • College-mandated capstone course.
  • Four art history courses, three of which will be chosen from five options at the 300-level and one course at the 400-level.

 

Other Programs Available

  • Bachelor of Arts degrees in art history and general art.
  • Master of Arts degrees in art history and studio art.
  • Interdisciplinary Ph.D. degree in art history.
  • The dual-degree program in studio art/secondary education available for those who wish to teach in middle school or high school.
  • A combined major in history/art history for students interested in the influence of historical developments on art.
  • An art history minor available to students majoring in other areas.

Faculty

Studio art faculty members are practicing artists who bring their insights and experiences to the classroom and studio by:

  • exhibiting and publishing their creative works,
  • serving as visiting artists nationally and abroad and
  • receiving honors, awards, grants, and fellowships.
