The Organization
The University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) is a public, research university offering traditional and interdisciplinary programs through the doctoral level.
UMKC has a broad and inclusive educational mission with specific emphasis in three areas: visual and performing arts, health and life sciences, and urban affairs. The University of Missouri-Kansas City is the successor to the University of Kansas City, a private university that admitted its first students in 1933. On July 25, 1963, the University of Kansas City became a part of the University of Missouri System, joining campuses located in Columbia, Rolla and St. Louis. UMKC has grown steadily since 1963 and currently enjoys a student on-campus enrollment of 12,900. UMKC has 1,800 faculty members and 1,500 staff members and an annual budget of over $300 million.
UMKC is a member of the NCAA Summit League and plays Division I-AAA sports.
The University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools and by numerous other school and department associations.
The Position:
The Chancellor, as chief executive officer of the campus, reports directly to the President of the University of Missouri and enjoys broad delegated authority for the administration of the campus.
Responsibilities:
As chief executive officer, the Chancellor is responsible for recommending broad policies for consideration by the President and the University of Missouri Board of Curators and implementing those policies. The Chancellor works with a wide range of internal and external constituents to provide overall leadership and direction for the University. The Chancellor is expected to foster and build upon the existing traditions, distinctiveness, and strengths of the University.
The Chancellor shall perform the duties associated with the general and active management of the affairs of the institution or as assigned by the President. The Chancellor has primary responsibility for enhancing and sustaining the University mission and all its operations by:
- Exercising broad responsibility for all aspects of the academic. student, administrative, and financial aspects of the University;
- Overseeing the direction of all planning related to institutional goals, academic programs, research and scholarship, public service, enrollment, and physical plant development;
- Developing and maintaining appropriate administrative organization, business and management infrastructure, and policy-making structures for the most efficient and effective use of institutional resources and the advancement of the University;
- Providing effective leadership and management of fiscal responsibilities in fund raising, academic programs, marketing and public relations, and in strategic planning to fully utilize the human and physical resources of the University with specific attention to the recruitment, retention and advancement of quality students and faculty;
- Taking a leadership role in the Kansas City civic, business and cultural community; and
- Representing and serving as the University's chief spokesperson with key constituencies on the local, state, and national levels, including alumni, local communities, civic groups, corporate organizations, public officials, urban schools, and higher education institutions to advance the mission of the University and gain both financial support and good will.
Professional Qualifications:
The following characteristics are among the most desired in the next Chancellor.
- Academic credentials and executive level administrative experience to lead a modern urban research university;
- An earned doctorate, equivalent terminal degree or equivalent professional background and experience;
- Demonstrated leadership and proven ability to manage the many functions of a complex organization.
- Experience with and a commitment to diversity;
- Ability to communicate and partner with all internal and external constituencies;
- Demonstrated success as an active fund raiser;
- Experience in working with public officials to advance the mission of the University;
- Strong interpersonal skills; and
- Intellectual, analytical, and ethical qualities that will command respect.
