Before Disaster Strikes: An Emergency Preparedness Workshop for Kansas Cultural Collections,” open to employees of Kansas cultural institutions and Kansas residents. The intended audience are Administrators and staff responsible for emergency preparedness, response and decision-making, in all types of cultural institutions, including libraries, museums and archives. The workshops are sponsored by the Kansas State Historical Society, the State Library of Kansas and other Kansas cultural collections organizations.

KCAA Annual Membership Meeting and Fall Symposium

Don’t miss the 2009 KCAA Fall Symposium, “Our Door is Always Open: Providing Access to Archival Collections” from 1:30 PM - 4:30 PM. Join us for an informative look at the challenges of promoting public access for archival collections through educational outreach, exhibits, and marketing. Our hosts will be the National Archives at Kansas City in their new location at 400 West Pershing Road, just west of Union Station.

The KCAA annual membership meeting (11:30 AM - 1:00 PM) will proceed the symposium. This meeting is intended for KCAA members to review officer and committee reports, and to make plans for the coming year. Non-members are welcome to attend, if interested. You may either bring your own lunch or order a box lunch (see the registration form). Beverages will be provided.

Keeping Your Past

Keeping Your Past:  A Basic Guide to preserving Your Family Papers and Photographs is a handy KCAA booklet, revised in 1999 and still available for purchase. 

This illustrated, 22-page guide serves as an introduction to the basic "do's and don'ts" of preserving family documents and contains useful guidelines for preserving both papers and photographs.  Included is information on the types and causes of document damage, methods of damage prevention, and measures which can be taken for documents already damaged.  Also included is a list of books for further reading, and information on how to contact a preservation expert if you need more assistance than the booklet can provide.

Cost of the booklet is $8.00 for members of KCAA and $12.00 for nonmembers.  To order a copy, send your request to the following address, enclosing a check or money order made payable to KCAA:
