What is the Coaching Program?

Mission Statement:
To provide students with the skills necessary for their journey at UMKC by assisting them in becoming engaged with the university community and promoting life-long learning through critical thinking and social awareness.
The Coaching Program takes many approaches to engage students in order to ensure their success. These components are:
• Weekly meetings with a Peer Coach with whom the students can share any concerns or day-to-day problems they are facing while pursuing their goals
• Social Events and Programs that allow students to interact with each other, their Peer Coaches, the Coaching Staff, UMKC officials, and community members. Six programs will take place during the fall semester, with each having a different, unique focus.
• Coaching Program staff that provides day to day support for students and Coaches. In addition, the Program Coordinator oversees all of the components of the program, and serves as an advocate for the students’ interests, both on and off campus.
• Academic Coordinators teach the A&S 100 courses and/or lead weekly group meetings with a cohort of students. The Coordinators also meet with each student individually three times through out the semester to set and modify academic and life goals
• A&S 100 is the university orientation course. The Coaching Program offers special sections of the course for Coaching students, with a special emphasis on the building of study skills, learning strategies, and critical thinking techniques.
• Success Seminars are held twice a week throughout the semester. The success seminars are mandatory for students on Financial Aid contracts and certain scholarship groups. The sessions have a different focus each week and include topics such as campus resources, financial responsibility, university academic policies, and study skills and testing strategies.
